Bernie Taupin's lyric is about a man who goes to space for a living and finds it's a job. Lonely, routine, a long way from home. Elton made it enormous anyway, and that gap - the sadness in the words against the size of the performance - is the whole of him. So I painted him at full volume: turquoise and hot pink, pink lenses, one diamond stud, grinning. This is Elton enjoying himself, which is most of the reason anyone loves him.
